HOW TO CREATE A NUTRITIOUS SMOOTHIE?

I hate to say it but if you take whey protein daily and dont already own a blender you are living in the past. Fruit and vegetable smoothies have to be one of the easiest ways to nourish your body with essential nutrients. Aside from the virtually endless amounts of ingredient combinations smoothies are also a great way to increase your vegetable intake without staring at a plate full of greens.

A smoothie for me is as much about convenience as it is taste. Using mainstream, easily available ingredients I find a good balance between cost and nutrition. I'm big and I'm a boy so my portion sizes are cups and handfuls and my ingredient list usually consists of anything thats within arms reach at the time. That said I feel there is still a method to making a good smoothie.

USE WATER OR MILK AS A BASE

Beginning with a base. I typically use a glass of water with a few ice cubes. Like many of us I struggle to drink the recommended 3 litres of water a day so this is a good way to hydrate. Many people use cow's milk as a base and I must admit it definitely makes the smoothie tastier however I feel it leaves me feeling bloated. As there are many different types of milk available (not just ones derived from dairy cows) it really is just personal preference for what works for you.

USE VEGETABLES AS YOUR MAIN INGREDIENT

Secondly I will add a vegetable or grain. This is the main ingredient in the smoothie and is usually handfuls of spinach leaves, kale or a few cups of rolled oats. There are encyclopaedias of information out there regarding the health benefits of leafy greens and oats. Typically oats will be for the morning to fill me up and keep me going and greens will be for later in the day.

ADD SOME FLAVOUR WITH BERRIES AND FRUITS

Lastly I flavour the smoothie with a handful of berries, a banana, peanut butter or honey. These flavours are not only add nutritional value but do a great job at masking the taste of the greens and oats. This where I add a few scoops of whey protein a teaspoon of flaxseed oil and glucosamine powder for joint health this combination will differ depending on individual supplementation needs.

With the large amount of nutritious, delicious smoothie and juice recipes posted now days by nutritionists, health bloggers and the likes you dont have to look far to find a recipe or two that is well suited to you. Just keep in mind that combining lots of fruits may make the smoothie taste great but it will increase the sugar levels just the same.
